Default Date Reference Oddity

Why when i use =MONTH(B15)

to call the month into a seperate cell does it always (regardless of
formatting) put the month in the days column

eg. if the formatting is dd.mm.yy

if the date is 02.05.06
the reference will invariably return 05.01.00

?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????

what on earth am i doing wrong????
