Default Get rid of tabs

Hello,
I have tables (originating outside MS Office) that have funny formatting.
I've been removing the undesirable formatting by saving as tab delimited
text, then resaving as xls. All has been well until I found a column of
data that contains tabs within a single cell. Then I thought of saving as a
comma delimited txt file, but commas can also be found within a single cell.

Is there a way to remove such tabs? In Excel they look like little squares.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Ellen

feature called "Advaced character removal" that should help......
