Default how do you change excel columns from numerical to alpha

hi,

recently, and for no reason i know of, my excel worksheets now have numbers
along the top of the columns instead of the letters that used to be there.

frankly, i don't like it and preferred the alphabetical references
(especially for formula) but i can't figure out how to change it back.....any
ideas?
