Default File-Open Long Delay

After starting up Excel 2002-SP3 or Word 2002-SP3 (or even My Documents), it
takes a long time (30-60 seconds) after I select File-Open before I actually
see the list of files. (Opening a file is not a problem). This delay
generally happens on the first time only, but it can happen repeatedly. I
have a 1.2 GHz processor and 512K RAM and run XP (SP2) and Symantec AV. I
have tried without AV, stopping the indexing service, and defragmenting, and
even moving many of my files to a CD to cut down on the number of files, but
this doesn't help. I have also tried the diagnostic startup with minimal
services and devices loaded. I have had this problem for several months. I
would appreciate any suggestions!

It's a long shot, but I have had problems like that, and it was a printer
issue. Try deleting old printers you don't have or don't use.

Are you mapped to any network drive?

Do you have any external drives (like USB thumbdrives/harddrives)?

If you have either, can you disconnect them to see if that helps?

Remember to keep track of any mapped drives, so you can remap them when/if you
want.

I thought that suggestion made a lot of sense, and I tried it.
Unfortunately, it did not resolve the problem. I'm going to keep looking in
that area, though.

Thanks,
John
