Default Format of Cells

We have a spreadsheet that every dept inputs info into, about 65,000 lines.
It could be dates or numbers or blank. The format for all cells right now is
DATE. Those that put in a "3" it converts it to a date. When we total
below, the counts are messed up because of the formats. Is there a format
that make dates =dates and numbers=numbers, blank = blank. Right now blank
is also counted as a ZERO.
Thanks for the help.
