Why does Excel, drop beginning zeros in zip codes on mailing label

When we print mailing labels, Excel drops the beginning zero in zip codes
causing us to have to add them manually. We are working with thousands of
labels and this is very time consuming.
Thank you

If you add an apostrophe to the front of the zip code, this shouldn't
happen. It forces Excel to recognise the characters as a string instead
of a number.

If you're printing the labels in Word, there's an article on the
Microsoft web site that might help you:

Answer Box: Numbers don't merge right in Word

Go to Format - Cells on top menu toolbar
On the Number Tab, in the left window click on Special
In the Locale dropdown, click English (United States)
You can now select Zip Code and any entry in the cell will retain formatting
