IF formulas

I would like to reference an IF formula to a specific cell. Similar to how a
VLOOKUP references a certain cell. Is this possible? I tried this;

=VLOOKUP(I3,DATA!1:65536,17)*IF(DATA!Q293="CUSTOME R ERROR","X",)
it returns a #VALUE!

Any ideas?
