Default grey dot in left upper corner of cell

What is this dot? Don't know how it got there, but it seems to coincide
with a strangely large file size for the cell. How do I get rid of this?

select the cell and press DEL ?

If the dot is in A1, then in B1 try =Len(A1) to see if there is valid
data there.

Is the cell format 'wrap'

Is the cell format text colour white (on white)?

Can you copy a blank cell and Paste it over this cell?

Any further clues?
