Default consistant cell format

I'm attempting to create pivot tables. I've been able to do this
successfully, but there are always cells that don't combine with the other
cells. When the pivot table comes up, these cells don't have the same format
as the others. I've tried highlighting them all and formatting them all the
same, but it doesn't work. The pivot table always comes out partially
combined...

This has also happened when I've tried to sort data. The cells aren't
formatted the same and excel doesn't sort the data correctly. Again, I tried
formatting them all the same but it hasn't worked. Any suggestions?
