how can I fix Excel "not responding" during file opening?

how can I fix Excel "not responding" during file opening?

When I open any file, no matter how small, I have recently begun to get a
freeze lasting about a minute. If I control alt del, I get a not responding
status. Tried freeing up memory and defragging but doesn't seem to help.
