I have a spreadsheet that contains a date in the format of yyyymmdd and I can

Is it one column?
Select that column data|text to columns fixed width, but remove all those lines that excel guesses and don't draw any yourself. Choose ymd as the format for the field. And finish up. If you have more than one column, do each separately. You can use a formula like this:
