AutoFilter Best Practice when used in large files (slow system dow

Using 2003

In large files (20,000+ records on various sheets) is there an efficient way
or procedure to speed up the use of selecting choices with the AutoFilter
dropdown box(es)?

I have:
reset the last cell (on each sheet)
re-booted
released the filter before choicing the next option
and a few other stabs in the dark.

If anyone has some ideas that have worked plese let me know.
I wish that XL had a utility to "scrub" the .xls files for efficiency like
Access has.

Thanks Dennis

Turning calculation to manual can speed up autofiltering.

I like to just interupt the calculation by hitting a key (usually the escape
key). The filter gets displayed nicely and I can usually wait for the
calculation.

Thanks Dave,

You know the old "assumption" gag. I assumed that auto-filtering was in
and up itself a calculation. BTW, with the calc on, I have tried to stop the
process by hitting Esc numerous times to no avail.

I now must experiment a new!
