Default Excel lock-ups

I am using MS Office 2000 for small business (SBE SR1). For some reason
I am recently encountering a problem where I cannot open any Excel file
in say MyDocs without first having to open a new workbook and going
through the File/Open option. If I go into MyDocs directly and try to
open an Excel file (which does have the Excel icon) it says "path not
found ...... ensure library is complete etc.". I have tried repairing,
uninstall/reinstall and downloading all updates from Microsoft website
but it has made no difference.

Can anyone help please

Thanks.

The `regedit` suggestion has worked a treat. Thank you.:)
