Default How to equate Text Drop Down selections to numerical values

I need to allow my users to select a text string from a drop downlist box.
However each of the three possible text strings in the drop down box equates
to a value that I need to use for calculations. How can I assign numerical
values to the text selections?

Could anyone tell me how to go about this?

Thanks, Bill
