Default Attachment size becomes much bigger from Office 2000 to Office 200

Problem:

When a user sends an attachment from Office 2000 to Office 2003, the
attachment size becomes much bigger. Such as a 5MB attachment will turn out
to be a 60MB attachment. It happens only on Word and Excel document.
However, there is no problem when sending an attachment from Office 2003 to
Office 2000.

Try resaving in 2003 format. This is a guess but Excel may be trying to
hedge it's bets by saving in 2000 format, xp format, 2003 format, etc all in
one file because it is unsure of which format to choose thereby vastly
enlarging the size of the file. If you save with the 'Save As' option being
2003, it MAY decrease the size of the file.

There's only one format from xl97 to xl2003.

There are options to save in combined format (includes xl95 and xl97+), but that
doesn't seem to apply to the original problem.

To the OP: If you zip the excel file first, what happens on the other end?
