Default Formatting: Display a minus sign before a number

How do I format a number so that it display a minus sign before the number. I
have a spreadsheet that was created by someone else, and it does this, but I
cannot figure out how to do it!

Is it all or part of the numbers in a column? Either way, enter the
number in the cell with a - sign. Then click on the column, select
FORMATCELLSNUMBER, select the type of number you are using (currency,
general, number, etc.) and you'll see a box for negative numbers. Pick
your pleasure and voila--it will show that way on your spreadsheet.

I should have mentioned the cell format is Accounting and the number is not a
negative, it is however used in a formula. For example =A3-A2

If you'[ll right-click a cell, a window pops up and allows you to
choose the visual display of a number.

Right Click the Cell and select format cells. Click on the Number Tab the
select custom. Enter this as your custom number format.

-#

now all number will have an extra - in front. (ie 12 will show as -12, and
-12 will show as --12). if you want only one - for negative numbers use this
format

-#;-#

if you want 0 to show as -0, use this format

-0;-#

I'm not an expert but should it not be:

=A2-A3

or

=MIN(A2:A3)-MAX(A2:A3)

just a thought!
