Should be very simple!
I need to shade gray the cell that contains the highest number in a row
using a formula

Select the rows in which you want to shade the cell with the max value, say
rows 2-10)!

Use Format/Conditional formatting, fill the Format conditions box like this:

Cell value equals to =MAX(2:2)

Choose a color!
