Default MAC file conversion

I received an Excel file from a person who uses a MAC. When opening it, a
message came up that the file needed to be converted using "Bin Hex 4.0".
Can anyone translate this for me and help me figure out how to properly
convert and open this file. Without conversion, the file is a bunch of
jibberish.
