Default Copy formulae and paste to range with Office 2003

As a long standing fan of Excel, starting with Excel 4 macros, I am dismayed
to find that many of the day to day activities have suddenly become much more
difficult with Office 2003, especially concerning clipboard.

For example, with Office 2000 and earlier I could copy a cell/ range & then
select a column (or any range) to paste into by clicking the first cell and
then selecting the remainder by CTRL+SHIFT+DOWNARROW before Pasting. Doing
this with 2003 results in a screen image being pasted instead, as the
CTRL+SHIFT+DOWNARROW keystrokes have copied the screen image multiple times
into the office clipboard.

Does anyone know how to either select ranges using different key strokes, or
alternatively to change the office clipboard "copy" settings?
