Default Open link in Excel, not Windows explorer

We have an Intrnet search which locates specific excel files on our
network. When you click on the link to the workbook, it open the
workbok in Windows Explorer, not actually launching Excel. This is a
problem because among other things, print preview is not available.
How can we alter this so that when you click on the hyper link, it will
launch Excel?
