How do I put the line in the toolbar that will show what I've typed so I can
make corrections without having to retype the entire row?

Click on View on the worksheet menu bar.
then make sure Formula bar is checked

Then you can position the I-bar cursor where you want.

So the poster may have been missing the formula bar. <grin

Use of F2 will help with entry so that you don't have to
start over. Also tools, options, edit (tab), edit directly in cell
