Default Interior borders

I would like to add interior borders to some of my cells in Excel. When I
right click in the cell and chose "Format Cells" and then "Border", I can see
that this is a possible option, however, it is grayed out and I cannot use it.

Seems like a simple task, but I am frustrated. Is there something I need to
load or activate to make this option available?

Sounds like the sheet might be protected, Nicole.

Thank you, Anne. However, it is a sheet that I created myself, and I just
double-checked to make sure I had not protected it - I didn't. Something
else must be going on. All the other border options are "on" including
interior diagonal lines. It is only the interior horizontal and vertical
lines that are "off."

The inside borders aren't available unless you select multiple cells. Then
the inside borders are placed "inside" the range of cells, not within the
inside of A cell.
