If it only selects a single cell it is unlike any problem I've heard of.

Check the boxes to the right on the status bar for EXT or ALT
remove by hitting F8 once, or twice to remove ALT. EXT
is where the selection is Extended from the original active cell.

If the mouse acts like you are dragging it and the mouse is not
depressed then see

Just out of curiosity is it an optical mouse, is it corded or wireless
