'Cannot insert object' message when I try to put a button on a worksheet

Dear Excel/ VBA programmers,
Every time I try to insert a command button from the 'InsertActive xCommand Button menu to an Excel Worksheet, I get a 'Cannot insert object' response. I was able to use Active X menu selections previously, but it seems my Excel won't let me do so anymore.

I need to have use of the Active X tools as I want to test a Visual Basic program - and not a macro, which I understand are the control form (upper) tools.

I did find a suggestion on the net which was to delete all temp files on my computer, but this did not make any difference, I still get that message.

I have read up on the net of Microsoft's issuing of patches causing problems for users of their software, but the articles say nothing on how to remove these patches.

Could you tell me how to remove these patches - if you know.

You can use either of the controls to access code in your 'program'
since the code in VBA projects *are* macros!

Hi Garry,
Do you mean I ought use the upper selection of tools, the control
form ones, rather than the lower ones, the Active X ones (as offered
by 'insert' menu) ? Isn't this a bit like caving in to the powers
that be ? (Microsoft, that is to say) If I got another edition of
Excel - would I still have the same problem ? I have got Excel on my
Laptop, which wasn't connected to the net the last couple of months -
maybe I should use that, but I'd prefer working on my PC. Yours

I have several versions of Excel installed, from v8 to 2010. All
versions require drawing the rectangle for the control object on the
worksheet. Both types (Form/ActiveX) come from Micro$oft and so doesn't
qualify either for not 'caving in' to the powers that be.

FWIW:
Personally, I don't like using controls on a worksheet and so I tend to
have my 'programs' create their own menus, leaving the worksheets clear
for data only. If I do need an 'action execution' fired from a
worksheet cell then I make that cell look/feel like a button and use
Worksheet_SelectionChange events to redirect to the macro assigned to
that cell address.

I uninstalled about half the updates since the date of when the 'Active X' controls last stopped working - and it is working again.
