Default Why are my column headings numerical instead of alphabetical?

Microsoft Excel 2003
The column and row headings in my excel spreadsheet are both numerical. Cell
references are in the form of R1C1, R2C2 instead of the usual A1, B2, etc.
How do I change my column headings back to the alphabetical format?
