Default Median function


hi all,
i wanted to find it out median from a huge data ..designation wise..
eg: in an office there are so many dept and their basic pay and in a
dept so many designations and i wanted to know the divisions median
...
but remember it's a huge file,.....can i do this with pivot tabel..
