Default Why does my Excel workbook take so long to update links?

I have an Excel 2003 workbook that has several links to other workbooks. When
I open it and update the links, it takes about 30 seconds to update, during
which time my PC slows almost to a standstill. Windows will report Excel as
'not responding' until the update is finished. My other files (with similar
links) take no longer than about 3 seconds. What could the problem be? How
can I fix it? I have run defrag, etc - makes no difference.
