i have a massive formula which i want to have a name for but i cant copy it
into the 'refers to' field. how do i put the formulas in for naming?

With the cell containing the fomula selected, Insert, Name, Define, and
name the item.

Had you considered entering your formula into multiple helper columns,
to assist you in that it would reduce the level of complexity and the
results from various stages of calculation could be checked. These
helper columns can remain hidden once the formula is working.
