Default Template functionality in Excel

I'm confused about templates in Excel. When I've used a template in Word, it
won't allow me to just hit "save." It forces me to Save As a word doc. I
just tried this with my Excel template, but it doesn't work. Does this
function differently than Word?

If you open a template and hit save it won't save over the original since it
adds a number to the file and defaulats to *.xls and not *.xlt
You have to physically change the name, the extension and directory to write
over the original and then you'll be warned as well.

Any chance you opened up the template -- and not created a new workbook based on
the template?

Check the title bar. If you see .XLT, then you're editing the real
template--not a workbook based on that template.

(File|new is one way to create a new workbook (or document) based on a
template.)

If you have a workbook that's never been saved, you'll see the SaveAs dialog
(and that works the same way in MSWord).

for firing the brain cells. This is what being unemployed for six months
gets me!

Good luck on the job search (if there's a search going on).
