Default Formula is treated as data

I'm using Excel2k and Win2k. All of the sudden when I create a formula
the actual formula (=Left(E3,3.......etc) is posted to the cell
instead of the result. I have checked everywhere I can, but I can find
no parameter. Even a simple reference like =D3 posts as the formula,
not the value from D3.

What I am trying to do is edit dashes into a phone number which is
formated as TEXT. For what it is worth, when I import the unedited
text phone number into Access2k, SOME of the numbers are treated as
DOUBLE data types. I have no idea if these problems are related.

Thanks for the help
Dick

Dick,

Check that Tools - Options - View - Formulas isn't checked. Ctrl - `
toggles that setting, and might have been inadvertently pressed. Also, make
sure the cells aren't formatted as text (Format - Cells - Number).
