Default if function with dates

I am trying to combine an if function with dates:

my formula reads: =IF(C2<"10/01/04",B2,"")

It is not working...can anyone help?

Default

It worked for me when I changed it slightly:
=IF(C2<DATEVALUE("10/01/04"),B2,"")

I think previously Excel was performing a text comparison, rather than
a date comparison.
