Default ms works spreadsheet

I downloaded an Excel form that I need to fill out. My computer does not have
Excel; but it has MS Works

spreadsheet. When I go to open the downloaded form with spreadsheet I get
the following error

message:

"This document is password-protected or encrypted. Open it in the
application that saved it, remove the

password encryption, then save it again. Then try to open it again in Works."

But I cannot OPEN it in Excel because I do not HAVE Excel. Isn't
"spreadsheet" supposed to be able to

open Excel docs? Is there a way around this?

Can you please help me open this important document?

go to microsoft.com and download the free excel viewer. This will at
least confirm you can open & read the doc/if not locked. Not sure of
any conversion/editing options for you from there.

Thanks. I did download the free excel viewer and it does open the doc. But I
cannot "save as" it as msworks spreadsheet doc. It opens strictly "read
only". I could print it out. But I need to fill out this form. I think if I
(or someone else) had Excel he/she could open the doc and then save it uisng
"save as" as a msworks spreadsheet doc.

The free viewer from Microsoft:

If that version isn't supported on your pc, Ken Wright posted this link to an
older version:

Or maybe a free spreadsheet program would work for you:
http://www.openoffice.org, a 60-65 meg download or a CD

As for office.org. I've downloaded it just now but it seems to be a huge
prpgram to install for the sake of opening one little Excel doc.

Ask the author of the document to save the file in a fileformat that Works can
open.

(.wks is one -- but it may not keep all the stuff that's in the file. I think
..wks support just one worksheet per workbook.)

I keep getting a message saying my email isn't recognized. I just did sign up
for this forum today.

The form I am trying to get is a New York City Dept. of Cultural Affairs doc
called "Fiscal Year 06 Application." It can be down loaded at the DCA site.
See paragraph below.

Proposal materials are available online through DCAs website. Go to
www.nyc.gov/culture and click on €śPublic Service Award: Fiscal Year 06
Application€ť to download the proposal materials.

That's where I went and dowloaded the Excel file that I cannot open with MS
Works.

If you would like, please dowload the form, open it in Excel, change it to a
MS Works spreadsheet doc (the extension is .wpi, I think).

And if not, if you feel this is an imposition, that's okay, too.

Oh, oh.

I hope Julie doesn't get mad at you for posting her email id. Lots of people
munge their id so automated programs can't read these messages and extract it
and send them junk mail.

If you're sending that person an email, you have to spell it correctly.

If you're going to refer to the email, it's best to mess it up so that humans
can fix it--but programs can't.

I sent the file in Works form to Mdelmatt. I wasn't able to completely
convert the file located at
http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcla/html/fu..._program.shtml (the
Budget file in Excel) It is openable and editable but because the sheet
has a protection on it, it would not let me directly convert into Works.
I copied and pasted into a new workbook then saved as Works-and lost
some of the formatting. Is there any way to unprotect the file once
you download it? Also, I would be curious to know if the reason they
protected it was to keep the integrity online (is that standard?) or if
it would have been to restrict it to only the Excel application? I will
follow along, if there is a way to unprotect the Excel to allow direct
import to Works I'll resend the file to you.

drop-down boxes in the Excel file that still don't show up in the Works
version-are these not going to show up completely/is this data lost in

The last time I used works was a lonnnnnnnnnnggggggg time ago. And then it was
only to see what it did (before I removed it!).

Julie and Dave:

First, thanks for your generous input. You guys are great! Second, here's
what became the solution: I was able to open thje file at work on my MAC
(which has an Excel for MACs program). I then filled in all the form's little
boxes (after hours) and printed it out. The DCA expects me to file a hard
copy anyway.

In case you're curious, the not-for-profit organization I am assiting here
is called Vocal Ease, a truly excellent organization run by a friend of mine
that puts on performances for the sick and elderly here in NYC. If you'd
like to know a little about it, its website is vocaleaseinc.org.

This Excel headace that began about a week ago "introduced" me to two very
nice people, Julie and Dave, and so in the long run I am glad I had it.
