Default Splitting Linked Files

I have 3 files used for materials management. They each contain data
crosslinked from file to file. The files have become quite large and editing
each is being impaired due to the size of the files.

Will splitting the files into several smaller files improve performance? The
links would still remain but each file would have a maximum of 25 or so
worksheets nstead of the 200 currently in the largest of the 3. Any input is
appreciated.
