I have Excel 2003 and every time you open a file, it asks you if you want to
save it when you exit. Prior Excel versions only gave a dialogue box to
save, when changes were made to the file. Is there a way to set it so that
it only pops up a dialogue box to save, if there were actually any changes?

Atlas, it likely has nothing to do with prior versions. You probably have a
workbook that has a formula in it like =NOW() or =TODAY(), both of which
"automatically update" and, in essence, change your file, which makes it ask
about saving.

If you have volatile functions that update when the workbook is opened you
will be asked if you want to save changes.

This has been the case for all versions of Excel.

Volatile functions are those like..........

AREAS()
INDEX()
OFFSET()
CELL()
INDIRECT()
ROWS()
COLUMNS()
NOW()
TODAY()
RAND()

If this is not the case, be aware that when you open an older version workbook
in Excel 2002 and 2003 you will asked if you want to save changes. Once you
save that workbook, you will not be asked again.

Thank you - that must be it. We are using new software that uses Excel to
display/read a database (I'm not a real techie so I'm not sure how that
works) but anyway this is the change that must have created behind the scene
formulas in all files I work in now. Thank you very much for your answer.
