Sounds like the workbook protection is enabled.

ToolsProtectionUnProtect Workbook.

You may have to supply a password.

Thank you for the response, unfortunately the spreadsheet is not protected!

Maybe the title bar is just off the visible screen.

Window|Arrange|Tiled
(and resize the way you like it)

Thank you for the reply but this did not solve the issue! there is still no
minimize or maximize or exit button for the workbook?

The only two times I've seen a window without those three buttons are when the
workbook is protected or when the title bar is just not visible.

You said no to both.

I don't have any other guesses. Maybe someone else can jump in.

MVPs- Your suggestions were right on. I was experiencing the same problem-
due to enabled Protection. I had forgotten at one point that this protection
was enabled. The previous user may not realize protection was enabled at
some point in the past (i.e. if the data was copied into a new, blank
workbook, the protection carries over. Maybe a previous user has enabled
it?) Since the owner is not asked for a password upon opening the workbook,
it's not immediately apparent. Also- I found that you do not receive any
sort of error or confirmation message if you have entered the wrong or the
right password at the Disable Protection box... If it's incorrect, only a
refreshed, blank password field. If you enter the correct passoword, the
password field (screen) disappears. Luckily- I got it on the third guess,
password box simply went away and the minimize and maximize buttons returned.

You MVPs and this site is awesome. Just had a peer come to me about the
missing Clsoe, resize and minimize buttons. I turned off the worksheet
protection , but missed the workbook protection. This had been a thorn in my
associates side for a number of months, and now it is solved thanks to this
thread.

Thanks to all of you!

Yes thank you. I had a coworker w/ the same problem but it was in excel
2007. JR Hester's comment got me thinking. I found under the review tab the
workbook protection was set. I'm supposed to be the Office 2007 expert (they
voted me as the expert). I'm back up to 100% problems solved. Thanks for
making me a hero again.
