Default can't highlight cell - highlights only cell's row and column

When I click on a cell, the contents of the cell are not highlighted.
Instead the cell's row and column are highlighted. I can't work with the
cell or it's formula itself. Help!

ToolsOptions, Edit tab, check Edit directly in cell
