you didn't say what version xl you are using so....
2003 and earlier
on the menu bartoolsoptionsgeneral tabuncheck R1C1 reference
2007
Office buttonExcel optionsformulasuncheck R1C1 reference

Go to the Tools menu, choose Options, then the General tab. There,
uncheck the "R1C1 reference style" setting.
