Default Print titles must be contiguous and complete rows or columns

I have a workbook in which I need to print all the pages, with continuous
page numbering...

I can usually select all sheets and print them, but I have some workbooks
that won't even go into print-preview, and get the following error message:

'Print titles must be contiguous and complete rows or columns'

I know that this can be because of incorrect entries in 'Rows to repeat at
top', or 'Columns to repeat at left' but none of my sheets have anything at
all in either box.

I believe that it can also be because of embedded objects with the wrong
print settings, but none of my sheets contain any objects.

What other reason might I be getting this error?

Any ideas?

Thanks

M

Thumbs up Answer: Print titles must be contiguous and complete rows or columns

Hi M,

The error message you are receiving usually occurs when there is a problem with the print area or print settings in one or more of the worksheets in your workbook. Here are a few things you can try to resolve the issue:
  1. Check the print area: Make sure that the print area is set correctly for each worksheet. To do this, select each worksheet in turn and go to the Page Layout tab. In the Page Setup group, click on the Print Area dropdown and select Set Print Area. If there is already a print area set, make sure it is correct. If there is no print area set, select the cells you want to print and then set the print area.
  2. Check for hidden rows or columns: Sometimes hidden rows or columns can cause issues with printing. To check for hidden rows or columns, select the entire worksheet by clicking on the Select All button (the box at the intersection of the row and column headers). Then, go to the Home tab and click on the Format dropdown in the Cells group. Select Hide & Unhide and then choose either Hide Rows or Hide Columns. If any rows or columns are hidden, unhide them and try printing again.
  3. Check for page breaks: If you have manual page breaks set in your worksheets, this can cause issues with printing. To check for page breaks, go to the View tab and click on Page Break Preview. If you see any blue lines indicating page breaks, you can adjust them by dragging them with your mouse. You can also remove them by going to the Page Layout tab and clicking on the Breaks dropdown in the Page Setup group. Select Remove Page Breaks.
  4. Check for merged cells: Merged cells can also cause issues with printing. To check for merged cells, select the entire worksheet and go to the Home tab. In the Alignment group, click on the Merge & Center dropdown and select Unmerge Cells. If any cells are merged, unmerge them and try printing again.

I hope one of these solutions works for you. Let me know if you have any further questions!

Maybe merged cells, either vertically or horizontally.

Thanks, but there are no merged cells either...

I did discover that if I'm on one of the sheets with a problem, and I go to
FilePageSetup, and select print preview from there (having made no
changes), that it goes into preview no problem, and prints ok. but If I go
into FilePage Setup and then close the box, and try print preview from the
toolbar, then I get the error message - weird?

Once I've done that, it will then go into preview and print OK - it all
works fine, but I need to do that on every sheet with the problem, EVERY
time this workbook is created.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong, so I can stop it?

Thanks

M

My very limited expertise in solving printing problems precludes a surefire
solution, but perhaps things like Headers and Footers, manual page breaks or
anything that cause a problem for the printer in calculating the page
parmeters. The big question is what is different about the sheet that the
printer balks on from the other sheets? It must be something that is not
obvious to the causual observer.
