Default Formatting formulas

I'm entering a formula into a cell. As I enter the formula, Excel is
providing the normal cues, i.e., telling me which argument I should be
entering (all well and fine). However, once I'm done, it appears that Excel
is interpreting what I entered as text. If I edit the cell, all looks fine.
If I check the Format of the cell, it says it's a text. What am I doing
wrong?

It does not matter. any formula I put in there ends up being interpreted as
text. I tried that first. Something as simple as =5*5 shows as text, not as
25

Try checking Excel Options and make sure the "Show formulas in cells instead
of calc results" is unchecked.

If I check the Format of the cell, it says it's a text.

Format the cells as GENERAL. If the formula is already typed into the cell
but appears as a text string, change the format to GENERAL then double click
on the cell (or hit function key F2) then hit Enter.
