subtotal outline not working
 

I have a data list I wish to subtotal and outline. What is the trick to get
the outline feature to work. All I can get are subtotals below is change in
description. Is there a view setting somewhere to see the 1, 2, 3 etc on
left side of workbook

In xl2003 menus:

Tools|Options|View tab|check Outline symbols

hi dave
it is excel 2007. I get the subtotals but no outline. tried every method i
googled. did the group, auto outline. i know it must be a check mark or
simple setting i am missing

I'm sure that the same option exists in xl2007.

Office button|excel options

And look for the Outline symbols option (maybe in a view category????)

Thank you this worked for me even in Excel 2010. I was wondering if this option is unchecked off by default or if it was changed at some point? Thanks for your help

go to start button, excel options, click advanced.. now go down to the secion that says "display options for this worksheet", make sure "show outline symbols if an outline is applied" is checked.
