Default Using "sort" in auto filter not possible when protected?

I have a sheet that is protected and uses autofilter. The "Allow Autofilter"
box is checked and autofilter does work when protected. However, in the
autofilter drop-down box, if I choose sort ascending or descending, it will
not. I have also tried checking the "Allow Sort" box - no luck. Is it
possible to sort with autofilter when a sheet is protected?

NOTE: Using Excel 2007. All cells to be sorted/filtered are not protected
when the sheet is.
