Default Method for protecting cells which still allows quick editing

Ive read a few posts on here and I think Im pretty clear on determining
which cells are locked for editing and which are unlocked for editing when a
sheet is protected (tools--protection--protect sheet). I also know how to
password protect a file for either opening or editing.

What I am looking for is a method of edit protection for individual cells
within a sheet (an entire column, really) which still allows for quick
editing by approved individuals.

Ex: a protected "signature" column that can be quickly edited by a few
individuals.

At this point, the only strategy I am aware of is to have the cells in the
specific column "locked" and the sheet "protected".

My dilemma is this method requires a tedious procedure for editing a cell in
the signature column: (1) un-protecting the sheet, (2) editing the
signature cell, (3) re-protecting the cell, (4) re-entering the protection
password.

Is there another method for cell protection with a more efficient editing
processsomething efficient enough for a process that is repeated several
times per day by multiple people?

Thanks.

Have you looked at
Tools | Protection | Allow Users to Edit Ranges

That allows certain individuals to have write access to a range of cells
while others do not have acess to those cells. Not sure if that is what you
are looking for...
