Default highlighting of cells and columns

When I want to format a cell or column and I click to highlight it the next
two cells or columns to the right get hightlighted as well. I have to use my
arrow keys to select the cell or the shift and arrow keys to pick the cell or
column I want. How can I reset or stop this from happening?

HELP!!!
