just got 07 installed and have been looking at some of the new commands.
when do you use the ball point pen feature? i have typed "ball point Pen"
into help and don't get anything helpful. Also what is the banded columns
feature?

Actually if you want to add the facilities of the column and the lots of features related to the searching then you should search the thing online for that facilities. I think you can get everything what you want.
