Default Text box disappears with 2 columns

I have added a text box with 2 columns to an Excel spreadsheet. If I keep
the text in 1 column, I can see it when I'm elsewhere on the spreadsheet but
as soon as I create 2 columns, I can only read the text when I'm in the text
box, otherwise the text box appears as blank. Help!
