Default Save as .xls causing format loss

Hey guys,

I have a file in Excel 2007, saved as XLSX. It's just few sheets with
prepared borders and some filling.

What is the point - I need to send it as XLS. Ok, there is a compatibility
check, which says I lose formatting in a chart (no problem).

When I open the XLS file, cells are all blank (no fill, no borders at all!!).

I am training excel for ages but can't figure out where I went wrong...

Thnx
