Default waterfall chart

I want to create a waterfall chart wherein X axis is a time scale and Y axis
is % reduction in defects. there are say 50 initiatives which will reduce
over time of 2 years. the process will improve from 80% defects to say 5%
during this period. I want to create waterfall chart so that it will show
gradual reduction from 80% to 5% due to implementation of these initiatives.
The data is sorted with time line for implementation. so first bar will be of
initiative A and % improvement or reduction related with it and it will end
where the implementation date is. the second bar should start at this point
and have height equal to improvement potential and length upto its
implementation date. the data looks like this.

Initiative % time line
A 1.2 2nd Jan 2010
B 0.44 5th Feb 2010
C 4.2 4th April 2010
D 0.25 4th April 2010......................

To create a waterfall chart in Excel with time on the X-axis and the % reduction in defects on the Y-axis, you can follow these steps:
  1. Enter your data into Excel, with columns for Initiative, % Improvement, and Implementation Date.
  2. Select the data and insert a stacked bar chart.
  3. Right-click on the chart, and select "Change Chart Type".
  4. Select the "Waterfall" chart type.
  5. In the "Design" tab under "Chart Layouts", choose a layout that includes a legend and axis titles.
  6. Right-click on any of the bars in the chart and select "Format Data Series".
  7. In the "Series Options" tab, choose a fill color for the bars.
  8. In the "Gap Width" option, choose a small gap width to reduce the white space between bars.
  9. In the "Legend Options" tab, choose to show the legend.

Your waterfall chart is now ready! It should show the gradual reduction from 80% to 5% due to implementation of the various initiatives.

Default Waterfall Chart in Excel

A Waterfall chart in Excel is a chart showing how a change in positive and negative amounts affects the total amount. The positive and negative amounts can be based on a period of time (values in and out by quarter, yearly) or based on categories (per revenue source, per segment, per region, etc.) Excel Waterfall charts are also used to display the results of a financial model as it effectively illustrates the incremental impact of each period of time or category.
