Default how do I keep excel from calculating text so it stands as is?

I am creating a worksheet that I want to list football scores, i.e.
W-L
23-6
41-23
Is there a way to keep excel from actually performing the subtraction
function so when I type them this way they stay there?

Pref-format the cells to text and enter the values
OR
Prefix your cell entry with an apostrophe
'23-6

If this post helps click Yes

You may want to use two cells.

Then you'll be able to do arithmetic pretty easily.
