I'm using Excel 2003 to update a spreadsheet that I've received from someone
else via email. The sheet has two tabs.

Something funny is happening - sometimes when I update one tab, the same
data sometimes appears in the corresponding position in the other tab. It's
weird.

Any idea what's happening??

sorry but i have to ask you one silly question (please don't mind), you sure
that there are no reference of the cells in second tab from the first tab? :)

A1 in Sheet2 has a formula
=Sheet1!A1

No, it's a good question. But no, there are no references to other cells. All
literals.

The tas were linked in another way. I inserted a row in tab 1, and Excel
also inserted a row in tab 2. I deleted the extra row in tab 2, and Excel
deleted the row in tab 1.

(Of course, I have just played with the same sheet - after saving, then
exiting Excel and reopening it - and can't replicate the problem, so maybe it
was a termporary problem.)

I assume that you had the worksheets grouped. If you select one worksheet
& then have either shift or control pressed when another sheet is selected,
the relevant sheets are grouped, and changes on one sheet are also
implemented on the other sheet(s). The tell-tale sign is that the header
will show something like:
"Microsoft Excel - Book 1 [Group]"

Sounds like you had both sheets selected.........grouped.

When sheets are grouped whatever you do to the active sheet will be done to
all.

Test this.............select Sheet1 then CTRL + click on Sheet2.

You should see [Group] in the Title Bar next to the Filename
