Well, Excel 2010 is still in Beta so its still a work in progress ...
The C API has been extended in Excel 2010 to allow for 64-bit and asynchronous UDFs etc. So the C API has been extended in both XL2007 and 2010: does not sound like its going to go away any time soon.
